,A group of current and former lawmakers from six Asean countries have urged member states to drop non-interference doctrine to compel the Myanmar military to stop killing civilians. In a joint statement, the six said Asean governments must pursue "constructive and critical engagements" with the option of imposing trade and economic sanctions on the Myanmar military. They also urge the Asean governments to demand that the Myanmar military free all political prisons, restore Myanmar's political situation to its Feb 1 state, and respect the November 2020 election results."All those responsible for the killing of innocent people must also be prosecuted and brought to justice."Failing which, all other Asean governments must unite and suspend Myanmar's membership of Asean and thereafter impose targeted trade and economic sanctions against the military junta and their associates," said the six.The six are former Cambodian Parliament MP Sam Rainsy, current Indonesian People's Representative Council member Fadli Zon, Malaysian Parliamentary opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Philippines senator Kiko Pangilinan, former Singaporean MP Charles Chong and former Thai cabinet minister Kasit Piromya.Asean is a 10 member grouping currently chaired by Brunei. So far, Asean has only called for a "domestic-led" solution among Myanmar's stakeholders.Myanmar's military, led by Min Aung Hlaing, launched a coup on Feb 1, deposing the democratically elected government. This caused widespread protest throughout the country, which had largely been peaceful. However, the military has reacted with violence. According to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at least 149 individuals have been killed with unlawful use of lethal force and 2,084 arbitrarily detained since the protests began Feb 1.The OHCHR said that there had been at least five deaths in custody in recent weeks, with at least two victims' bodies showing signs of "severe physical abuse indicating that they were tortured".Malaysia's response to the crisis has been meek, with Putrajaya offering "serious concern" over the military takeover and describing the situation as a "setback".
